If you’ve been using Zarvana or another productivity app and you’re starting to see some impressive productivity growth, now is the time to think about how to sustain those improvements. To understand how to sustain your improvements, it helps to understand how you can change your behaviors.
Stanford psychologist BJ Fogg says that there are basically three ways to change your behaviors:
- Experience an epiphany (i.e., a flash of insight)
- Change your environment
- Form a “tiny habit“
As Fogg says, the first is hard to control, leaving you largely with the second two to drive your productivity growth. If you’ve been using Zarvana or another productivity app, then you’ve likely already been forming small habits.
To sustain those small habits, you will want to use the final change pathway: changing your environment. Environmental changes create external forces that make it easier and more rewarding to do the new habits you’ve formed. We call the key environmental change you can make the Buddy System. It’s how our founder, Matt, started his journey to productivity growth and it’s how he and others have sustained such growth over multiple years.
Watch the video below to understand how to use the Buddy System in your own workplace:
If you find yourself in a workplace environment that is hostile or ambivalent toward the kinds of values that incentivize productivity growth, the Buddy System is even more important because it is feasible and at the same time, has a large potential impact. The Buddy System enables you to demonstrate the advantages of productivity-focused values so that others become enticed by the benefits.
